WHO WE NEED

MSF recruits medical and non-medical field staff to work on our projects.

Medical Field Staff

  • General and specialist doctors including surgeons and anesthetists
  • General and specialist nurses
  • Midwives
  • Medical Scientists (Lab Techs)
  • Psychologists
  • Pharmacists
  • Epidemiologists

Non-Medical Field Staff

MSF relies heavily on many non-medical staff:

  • Logisticians (including supply specialists, mechanics and builders)
  • Financial Controllers / Administrators

*No recent gap in clinical(medical or paramedical) or work(non-medical staff) experience greater than 2 years.

RECRUITMENT CRITERIA FOR MEDICAL AND PARAMEDICAL ROLES

Physician, Pediatrician, and Obstetrician, Gynecologist

As a doctor working for MSF, the primary diseases you deal with vary depending on the mission, but significant knowledge and experience is needed. Knowledge and experience of tropical medicine and/or infectious diseases is very useful. You may also be supervising and training local staff and controlling medical supplies and equipment.

  • At least 2 years clinical experience
  • Training and managerial experience
  • Mission Period: 6-12 months

General Surgeon, Orthopedic Surgeon, Anesthetist

MSF surgeons and anesthetists often perform surgery in situations where facilities are limited and for emergencies. A wide range of surgical experience, an ability to flexibly respond medically with limited facilities, equipment and staff is required. Depending on the situation, responsibilities may include not only general care but also needs assessment and training of local staff.

  • At least 2 years post registration experience. 4 years for anesthetists
  • Mission Period: possible short missions from 6 weeks

Psychiatrist, Psychologist

As a psychologist with MSF, you may work with people suffering from mental disorders due to conflict, natural disaster, sexual violence, and with children in shelters or street-children. Treatment in the field must be flexibly delivered to meet the circumstances and context. Additionally, you could be asked to train local staff in counseling techniques.

  • At least 2 years clinical experience
  • Advanced language skill and ability to communicate
  • Mission Period: 6-12 months

Nurse

All projects have different tasks. In many cases, as a nurse working for MSF, your main responsibility is supervising, training and coordinating local staff, rather than direct nursing care. Decision making is team based, however as the person in charge you may be required to make operational decisions.

  • At least 2 years clinical experience
  • Managerial and training experience
  • Mission Period: 6-12 months

OT (Operating Theater) Nurse

Significant experience as an OT Nurse, assisting with operations, managing medical equipment and materials, providing post operation care, and training and supervising staff.

  • Mission Period: 3-6 months

Midwife

You may be involved in education and awareness campaigns for family planning and protection against sexually transmitted diseases as well as delivery assistance, antenatal and postnatal care, etc. Here again, training and supervision of local staff is your main task. Where no obstetrician is available you may be required to deal with high-risk or complicated cases.

  • At least 2 years clinical experience (accurate judgment and technique required for high-risk deliveries).
  • Training and managerial experience
  • Mission Period: 6-12 months

Laboratory Technician

You may be involved in performing various tests and quality management, control of blood supply, collection of epidemiological data and statistics. Additionally, you may be training and supervising local staff.

  • At least 2 years clinical experience (knowledge or experience in epidemiology and tropical medicine, HIV/AIDS, TB, or parasitic diseases would be an asset).
  • Managerial and training experience
  • Mission Period: 6-12months

Pharmacist

  • 2 years experience in control of drugs and medicines, running a pharmacy, training staff and negotiating with local authorities and organizations. Hospital experience is desirable.
  • Mission Period: 6-12months

Epidemiologist

Examples of roles include outbreak management to help teams plan appropriate response type and location, such as active case finding or vaccination or water-sanitation improvement (e.g. meningitis, measles or cholera), designing, conducting and supervising a mortality and prevalence survey, evaluation and setting up of surveillance systems, or epidemiological support in a complex project to support evidence based decision making.

  • Medical or Paramedical background
  • Must have a degree or master’s degree in epidemiology, or an MPH with extensive epidemiology training.
  • A minimum of 3 months experience in total (has conducted two or more surveys) of surveys or research on Malaria, Cholera, Meningitis, Measles, Yellow fever, TB, HIV/AIDS, etc., in a developing country or similar environment.
  • Mission period: 6 -12 months

RECRUITMENT CRITERIA FOR NON-MEDICAL PERSONNEL

Non-medical professionals are the backbone of every MSF mission and without them it is impossible to do our work. Non-medical staff make up 40% of field expatriates.

Administrators (Financial Control/Human Resource Management)

You will be in charge of financial control, human resources management and overall administration. Tasks may include: financial administration (accounting, budget management, reporting); HR management (local staff management, contracts, salary, training, and evaluation); legal and taxation issues; field expatriates departure procedures (visas, work permits, flights); and general administration for office, warehouse, and accommodation.

  • At least 3 years work experience in financial or human resources management
  • High level of language skill in order to conduct negotiations with local authorities and organizations
  • Mission Period: 1 year

Logisticians

As "all-round players", logisticians provide technical and managerial supports to all mission activities. The tasks of logisticians range widely depending on the project and may include: the order, purchase, transport, and stock control of supplies; management and maintenance of vehicles, communication equipment, machinery and electricity (including generators); management and maintenance of cold chain for vaccines, drugs and medicines; management of building construction and repairs; and construction of water and sanitation systems.

  • At least 2 years work experience
  • High level of communication ability
  • Mission Period: 6-12 months
  • Experience in any of the following would be an asset: construction, machinery, electricity, communications, vehicles, supply, and water and sanitation

OTHER NON-MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS

Mechanic (vehicles)

  • Trade license and at least 2 years of work experience

Construction

  • Trade license and at least 2 years of work experience
